Willie Mae Stokes

September 18, 1930 ~ August 4, 2018 (age 87)

Mrs. Willie Mae Stokes passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 04, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Willie Mae Davenport Stokes, 87, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 4, 2018 in the arms of her loving children.  She was born in Savannah, Ga., on September 18, 1930 to Willie and Josephine Daniels Davenport.  She had one sibling, Hattie Mae Coston, who preceded her in death.

She attended public school in Chatham County and graduated in 1948 from Beach Cuyler High School in Savannah, Ga.  She furthered her education at Savannah State College and Savannah Vocational Technical School.  Willie Mae married Robert Stokes in 1950 and to this union five children were born, one son Gregory Stokes preceded her in death.

Willie Mae worked for Belk of Savannah for many years and retired as a Sales Associates.  During her career at Belk she earned several awards for Exceptional Sales Achievement and Outstanding Customer Service.  She was a member of Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church for over 70 years and served on the Nurse’s Guild and in the Orchidetts and Pastor Support ministries.   She studied her bible avidly through Sunday School and Bible Study and her study at home.  Willie Mae was known for her sweet and humble demeanor, virtuous character and as a loving and beautiful daughter who cared for her father from the age of sixteen after the passing of her mother until his death.  Her children witnessed this love unknowingly that her care for her father before them was teaching and preparing them to one day care for her in years ahead.

She leaves to cherish her memories loving and devoted children, two sons, Ronald Stokes, Bronx, NY and Robert Stokes, Savannah, Ga., two doting daughters Stephanie Stokes Cutter (Robert), Savannah, Ga., and Carolyn A. Stokes, Raleigh, NC, two grandchildren, Cheryl Griffin and Duane J. Hawkins, three great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren and a devoted and lifelong friend Hattie R. Mayes-Kerton.
