Verdell Mary Holmes

Mrs. Verdell Mary Holmes entered eternal rest on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at her residence under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc.

Mrs. Verdell Mary Croney Holmes (Sister) as she was affectionately  called was born in Live Oak,Fla March 26,1929 to the late Mrs Sallie Bee Herring Croney and Mr. Willie James Croney. Mrs Holmes had a brother Thomas Croney  that preceded her in death as a child.

Mrs. Holmes attended schools in Suwannee County graduating from Douglas High School. She met Dock Holmes Jr. where they eloped before she graduated. They were married 50 years at the time of Dock’s death. To this union five children were born. Two preceded her in death.

She joined Allen Chapel Methodist church at an early age. She later joined Goodwill Baptist Church where she attended faithfully until her health started failing.

Verdell was a kind hearted person she was a mother to many of the neighborhood children.  From feeding them to giving them rides to school activities to scolding them when needed. Family was everything to her she instilled this in her children at an early age. She loved working in her flower garden and helping her neighbors. She loved crafting. She retired from Savannah Convalescent Center in 1992. She was also a licensed Cosmetologist. She worked with the feed a friend program at Goodwill Baptist Church until it ended. She was a member of Daughters of the Elk Elite Temple #71.She was also a devoted member of The Women of Faith at Goodwill Baptist Church.

 She was dedicated to making her neighborhood a safe place for her family and others she was instrumental in getting the City of Savannah to put sidewalks in the neighborhood and fought to get the Chatham Transit Authority buses to travel further in the neighborhood.

She gained her heavenly wings on Saturday June 2, 2018 at 9:15am which is 5 years to the day that her cousin Shirley Ford gained her wings. Verdell and Shirley were not only first cousins they were sisters. Now they are together again, oh what a time!

She leaves to cherish her memories her three devoted children a loving daughter Lillian Yvette H. Foster (Skip). Two loving sons Dock Holmes III, Dwayne J. Holmes. Seven grand children Dock Holmes  IV (Iesha), Taylor D. Colonel, Terry J. Holmes,Breanna Holmes, Benjamin R. Foster lll, Natasha Foster, Kenya Foster, Latoya Pinckney-Alleyne, (Denzil) , Marques Pinckney.  Ten great- grands , A sister-in-law Jonell Holmes,Detroit,Michigan.  Daughter-in-law, Diane Holmes- Steed,(Henry) ,God-daughter Ronetta  Jordan, San Angelo TX,  Her dedicated friend Joyce Daise, A host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018 at

Goodwill Baptist Church 816 Bowden St. Savannah, GA

Interment ~ Woodville Cemetery.
