Mrs. Dorothy King died at Memorial Medical Center, surrounded by her family, on July 12, 2018, after a long illness. She was 90 years old.
Mrs. King was born on April 28, 1928 in Sylvania, GA to Mrs. Ophelia Morris and Mr. Wilson Morris. The family moved to Lapageville, GA. when she was an infant. She was educated in the Savannah School System, and she was considered very smart, but she was withdrawn from school in the seventh grade to help care for younger children in the family while the adults were working. Mrs. King married Mr. Herman King in 1953. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. In her early career, she worked as an elevator operator. She worked as a cook at various restaurants in the Savannah area, and she prepared income tax returns to earn extra money. Mrs. King also worked as a cook and retired from Wesley Center Head Start Program. Mrs. King said her employment at the Wesley Center brought her the greatest satisfaction of her work history. The children loved her and came to her for hugs and treats. Mrs. King often recounted meeting former students, in stores and on the street, who had become teens or adults. They stopped her and inquired if she was Mrs. King from the Wesley Center and reminded her that they attended the Head Start Program, and they remembered their pleasant interactions with her.
In 1977 Mrs. King stated she began to feel a calling to serve God. According to Mrs. King, she knelt at her bedside and she asked God to send someone to her. Later that day, Brother Stanley Walthour and Sister Vernita Williams with True Born Church of Christ, Inc. knocked at her door, and they invited her to church services. Mrs. King attended church services, and she soon joined True Born Church of Christ, Inc. Mrs. King received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and she served as Church Mother and Church secretary. She was a faithful member for 41 years until her death.
